Some of you reading this may be surprised to see birth photos on my website. I don’t advertise myself as a birth photographer. In fact, this is the first birth story I have ever photographed. There are a few reasons for that. Before I advertise myself as a photographer who offers such services, I want to be sure I can do the event justice. Then there is also the schedule. You never know when a woman will go into labor, so birth photographers, like other birth workers are on call around the clock from 38 weeks to 42 weeks of a woman’s pregnancy. That includes holidays! I’m still not sure that such a lifestyle is one fit for my family year round and on a larger scale. I want to be prepared and do it the right way. Foremost, for my clients but also for myself and other Birth Photographers whom I respect and have been in the field for years.
This is a day (or sometimes days) that you can’t do over. Mom is so focused on birthing her child that she has to be in the moment. Birth Photographers are hired because she wants to remember those moments as they were–forever. I was absolutely honored to be the photographer to forever capture these memories for a friend.
Onto the stuff you are here to see. The photos. This birth was beautiful. Very calm, empowering and…FAST! I’ll spare the details of the day since I do feel that the story is something for mom to share in her own words. These are some of the photos from baby’s first few moments. Immediately after birth, opening his eyes to see mom. Dad leaning in to meet baby for the first time. Mom checking the gender of the baby, which no one knew before hand! Big brothers meeting the new baby and mom’s friends and birth support all capturing their own very first images of the new babe. There were just over 150 final photographs of the day. Only a sampling are shared here due to the personal and private nature of birth. I hope you enjoy seeing these photos as much as I enjoyed capturing them.
Will I continue to offer Birth Photography services? Maybe. I was completely inspired and energized by this day and this birth and I want to. On a personal level, providing families with their first moments together is important to me. If you are interested in me photographing your child’s birth, I encourage you to reach out to me. I will consider it. I promise. I will also be very selective right now until I’m sure that the schedule required of me is one that suits my family as well as yours.
