As a newborn and family photographer in the Northern Virginia area, I love watching my families grow. One of the biggest honors of my job is when families ask me to photograph their new baby. Once is plenty enough to be grateful for, but when they ask me again, for each baby, it’s so special to me!
I first met this family when their daughter Mia was born. I also took her milestone photos as a part of my baby plan.
Now, Mia is a big sister! Nolan is here and he’s the most perfect little guy. I fell in LOVE with his perfectly fresh baby mohawk! Mia is the sweetest sister and was happy to hold her brother for photos. We had a pretty fun conversation about animals and it was amazing to think back to the baby she once was, laying on this exact rug.
Mom and dad are the sweetest, and I’m so grateful to them for trusting me with these precious memories. I mean, who wouldn’t think back to the way baby hair smells after seeing the detail photo of that little mohawk.

There is nothing better than when my tiny clients get out of the car and tell me “Miss Jamie is my best friend!” Big sis and I go way back to her newborn days. If you’ve followed me for a bit, you have no doubt seen them before.
As a matter of fact, I last photographed them 6 months ago when baby brother joined the crew!
It was so great to see these four again.
I have had had the pleasure of photographing this sweet family since their oldest was born. This year was the first year we have had to contend with unfavorable weather.
Fun fact, when I was in middle school, I thought I wanted to be a meteorologist. Who knew I would grow up to be a photographer, aka a part time meteorologist. The weather predictions for their session waffled between rain and sun shine the entire week. My typical policy is to check in 2-3 days before photos if weather is looking particularly unfavorable. Usually no decisions are made until the night before, or the morning of a session because weather predictions can change so much. The night before photos, mom and I chatted on the phone. Together we weighed the pros and cons of rescheduling to another week. Big con, these leaves don’t stay up on those trees forever! The evening appeared to be rainy and the morning sunny. In the end, we waited until the next morning and decided to move their session time up 30 minutes since it wasn’t predicted to rain until 6.
It turns out, that was a lie. Ok, really it was a bad weather prediction, but it started raining 20 minutes into their session time. We rolled quickly through some really great poses for big brother, the whole family, and then baby brother, mom and dad then the sprinkles started.
These guys know me and my work pretty well by now, they know they can trust me. I was prepared with a rain coat and umbrella as well as other gear needed for light rain. So at their decision, we trucked on! I have a really amazing app, Dark Sky, that shows you how hard it is supposed to rain, and when it will stop within the next hour. We decided to wait the rain out since the app predicted a short break in 10 minutes. The rain did as the app predicted so we dashed back out to finish up! When started sprinkling again, we learned it was very dry under a large pine (no lightning so it was safe). The color of the leaves in the background popped so beautifully from the glow of the rain on them and their photos have a beautiful water color effect!
I met the sweetest pair of babies a few months ago. I am so very happy for these mamas and their two babies! Heather and I met for coffee to plan their session. She told me that she had a vision for a mermaid and a fisherman and in that instant I just knew it would be so fun to create! Of course we also made sure to take some timeless, neutral photos of the twins as well as parent poses for them to hang at home and gift to family.
It took me a while to get to sharing their photos on the blog, but if you follow me on facebook, you have seen some of these already!

I just love the tradition this family has started for their little lady’s birthday. Annual family photos, balloons and a cake in front of her cute birthday sign. This sweet girl was so on for family photos and was so full of spunk. I’m not sure if her sweet snuggles with mom and pop, or her sassy sunglass photos are my favorite!

If there were a contest, this little guy would win for most expressive baby. He smiled more than any newborn I’ve ever met! Patrick was such a mellow sweetie and slept for me his entire newborn and family session. His parents are baseball fans, especially papa, so we incorporated some of the fun props they brought along for their session too.
